Eric Campbell is a man of many talents. An American student from Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, he completed his Bachelor’s in French at Guilford College in 2010. After graduating, he served as a Peace Corps Health volunteer in Niger, and then in Madagascar. In the latter country, he traveled with two Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doctors as their assistant and interpreter as they investigated a bizarre malaria outbreak in the Androy Desert. Some locales in this outbreak saw malaria rates rise by 1200% from 2010 to 2012. The data from the mission indicated that climate-induced shifts in rainfall had created a more hospitable environment for mosquitoes to breed. This event sparked Eric’s interest in the intersections between anthropology, public health, and climate change. While many scientists and policymakers focus on climate change prevention, Eric prefers to explore the adaptational measures that ordinary people can take. Eric is an avid blacksmith and martial artist, but his favorite pastime of all is chopping firewood.
